Summary: "Don't pretend that you own me," I muttered.

The vampire's eyes gleamed a dark, almost crystalline amber in the dim.

"You swore that you'd never come here," he murmured, his voice low; the tone in it was enough to make my skin crawl. "Yet here you are, in answer to my summons. By the time I've finished with you tonight, that oath will be at war with your new obligation: To never leave my side."

His hand lifted, to beckon me closer. Instead, I took a few steps back.

"Don't pretend that you own me," I muttered. "I don't even know why I'm here, apart from that your lackeys brought me here against my will. That's hardly you summoning me, according to my definition. I would never have come here on my own; you know that as well as I do."

His eyes narrowed. "You see those stones over there," he asked, pointing to a series of lumps of stones along one wall. "Those mark the graves of everyone else who thought they could defy me. I'm fed up with rebellion on the part of the mortals I call to me." He rose, slowly approaching me. "My authority over you will be absolute. Unquestioned. You'll wear it like a halo...and you'll enjoy it." Once he was close enough, his hands gripped my shoulders. "You'll see that this is the place where you've always belonged."

I tried to shove his hands away. "Keep back! You'll never keep me here, you coal-hearted monster!"

One of his arms slipped around behind me, to clutch me close against him. His other hand clamped over my mouth, the grip too formidable to twist out of.

"That's the last such line you'll ever speak without my permission," he growled. "I'll break you of that habit; I'll make you forget it, as surely as an amnesia patient forgetting their past."

I tried to struggle, to scream; but his hold on me was unrelenting. His eyes stared deep into my own.

"Stop resisting me," the vampire murmured softly, putting an eerie note into his voice. One that tried subtly to order surrender. "Give in, and I swear that you'll never know a moment's regret or sorrow."

His influence was strong; it burrowed its way into my mind, waking up something disturbing within me. A longing to accept the embrace that I was trapped within. Slowly, I felt my will to defy being drained away, until it was soon gone.

"Yes," the vampire whispered, feeling the tension in my muscles fade as his will overrode mine. "You know that this is all you've ever longed for. This dark communion. Before the next sunrise, you'll be as I am: Immortal. Eternal. Ageless. We'll be side by side for all time. Now," he breathed, mouth lowering against my ear, "tell me you accept this."

His grip on my mind grew firmer, as a precaution, as his hand slipped from my lips.

"Tell me," he whispered again.

I tilted my head back, baring my throat in answer to the command that he hadn't yet spoken.

"I accept it," I breathed, the words spilling out of my mouth like water, pulled out of me by his hypnotic power.

The vampire's mouth lowered, hovering just over my pulse.

"Then, from this night forward, I own you," he growled, before plunging his fangs deep.
