They came out of the wormhole straight into an asteroid field.

“Whoah!” cried Hunk, swerving his lion past a hurtling rock. “Allura could have warned us about this!”

“According to scans, the castle is just on the other side,” Pidge reported over the comms. “We just have to get past the asteroids and we’re home free.”

“Just?” Lance squeaked. “Have you looked outside?” He slammed his lion to one side. “Gah! That was close.”

Shiro’s calm tones silenced further protest. “Just stay focused. Keith, can you help us out at all? Your lion’s the most agile.”

The red lion shifted position to fly ahead of the others. Keith plotted trajectories and charted a path through the deadly obstacles.

“I think so,” he said. “Shiro, grab my tail and I’ll lead you guys through.”

“On it,” Shiro said. He manoeuvred the black lion so it was directly behind Keith and it took the red lion’s tail in its mouth. “Pidge, you fall in behind me. Then Lance. Hunk, you bring up the rear.”

“Why do I have to go last?” Hunk asked.

“Because last position is most likely to get hit and your lion has the best armour. Now, quit complaining and let’s get back to the castle before we get pounded into space dust.”

The lions drew up into a line, each one grasping the tail of the one in front. The negotiated the asteroid single file, with Keith yelling out instructions for them to avoid collisions as they went.

Before long, they were through the asteroids and out into open space beyond. The castle came into view and Coran’s voice sounded over the comms.

“Paladins! Glad to have you back. Though that’s not a formation I’ve seen before!”

“Whatever works, Coran,” Shiro said. “Whatever works.”
