SG-1 were barely through the event horizon of the wormhole, when a richly dressed man threw himself on the ground before them. Jack’s hand went instinctively to his weapon, and he caught Carter’s matching movement out of the corner of his eye. The man wasn’t acting in a threatening manner, but you could never be too careful.
“Thank the gods!” the man said, a little breathlessly, as it seemed he had been running. “They have sent emissaries just when we need them most.”
Daniel looked at Jack, who waved him forwards with a look meant to say, “Over to you.”
Squaring his shoulders, Daniel walked to stand just in front of where the man knelt.
“We are peaceful explorers,” he said. “But we would be happy to help you if we can.”
The man looked up, hope and awe shining from his eyes. He was in late middle age, his face heavily lined, but what hair could be seen underneath his hat was dark. The hat dominated his outfit. It was tall and cylindrical, the frame wrapped in an ornate brocade fabric in shades of red and orange. Jack thought it looked like his whole head was a Roman candle, but he decided not to make this observation out loud. He didn’t think Daniel would appreciate it. By comparison with the hat, the man’s robes were plain, but still expensive-looking, with multiple coloured layers. Jack tried to imagine him running down the path to the gate, wide sleeves flapping, and had to stifle a chuckle.
“My name is Tethon and I am the village elder,” he said, still regarding Daniel with a worshipful gaze.
Daniel introduced himself and the rest of the team, then made a rising gesture. “Please get up,” he said. “There’s no need to kneel.”
Tethon looked disconcerted, but allowed Daniel to help him to his feet.
“Now,” Daniel said, once they were eye to eye. “What can we do to help?”
Tethon’s eyes widened. “There has been a murder! The first in a hundred years. You must act as Lawgivers and determine who has committed the crime.”
Daniel looked round at Jack, eyebrows raised.
“You heard the man,” Jack said. “Lawgivers, that’s us.”
Tethon nodded. “Follow me. I will take you to the village, so you can begin.”
He turned and started hurrying away from the gate.
Jack stepped up next to Daniel and they followed Tethon together.
“I bet there’s a dame involved somehow,” Jack said.
Daniel glared at him. “This isn’t a joke, Jack. Someone’s been killed. And these people need impartial investigators to help them work out what happened. This has historical precedent in lots of cultures where crimes are committed in small communities. Someone would be summoned from a neighbouring community to conduct enquiries, as there was no way to ensure someone from the affected village would be unbiased.”
Jack clapped Daniel on the shoulder, and grinned widely. “I get it. Everyone’s got something to hide, except me and my Space Monkey.”
