100ships prompt 066: grey
Summary: Gandalf receives a map and a key from a nameless prisoner.
Gandalf scrambled through the broken rocks and pits surrounding Dol Guldur. He murmured softly as he went; a small making, to let his grey robes blend with the grey stone and encourage the guards’ eyes to slide past him. The quiet song of the land beneath aided him as it could. This place had once been the abode of Elves, though it was now the fortress of a far darker power.
Some of the pits were covered with an iron grating. Gandalf glanced down into each of them as he passed. He was here to find information, but he could not leave anyone alive in Sauron’s power.
One of the pits held a crumpled heap of rags—but there was the slight movement of breathing. After a quick glance around, Gandalf pushed the grating to the side and climbed down.
The prisoner was an old Dwarf, his face gaunt and lined, his body broken with torment. Though his heart still beat faintly, his eyes stared blankly ahead.
Gandalf carefully wet the prisoner’s lips with water from his flask. Using Narya’s strength, he sent a tiny amount of warmth and life into his veins. The prisoner’s eyes slowly focused on him.
“Who?” he croaked out.
“A friend,” Gandalf said. “What is your name?”
The old Dwarf shook his head. “My son,” he rasped weakly. “I kept one thing away from him. Give it to my son.”
With the bloodied stumps of fingers, he gestured to the stone wall of the pit. Gandalf found one stone loose, the mortar patiently scraped away. Inside the small hollow lay a folded parchment and an intricate silver key.
But when Gandalf turned back, the old Dwarf was dead. It would be many years before Gandalf could learn his name: Thráin, king-in-exile of the Lonely Mountain.
